A decade ago, R.City founder JD Hill started collecting food scraps from Phoenix Valley homes and restaurants on his bike. Today, R.City includes a farm and a service area of over 1,200 square miles. Thanks to his partnership with Mill, JD’s mission to turn food scraps into food is more impactful than ever.

A little bit more about R.City

It was the idea from day one to have our own farm, to use the compost to grow the vegetables, and sell the vegetables. With all the revenue we get from food-waste collection, we're able to pay all the typical overhead costs of a small farm. We pay for everything besides labor, and then farmers are able to come on to the property, utilize all the resources for free, and then we buy 100 percent of what the farm grows.

The impact

We are de-risking small farming. If tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of households in the Phoenix area do this, we're going to have the most successful local food system in the world.
